Format punctuation

You can have Pages automatically convert quotation marks to curly quotation marks and convert double hyphens (--) to dashes (—) using controls in the Substitutions window.

Choose a quotation mark style

You can specify a quotation mark style for single and double quotation marks in your document.

  1. Select the text, then choose Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions (from the Edit menu at the top of your computer screen).

    To apply formatting to specific existing text, select the text first.

  2. In the Substitutions window, make sure the Smart Quotes checkbox is selected.

  3. Choose a quotation mark style from each of the pop-up menus.

  4. Click a button to replace all occurrences of quotation marks in the document, or just in the selected text.

Use smart dashes

  1. Choose Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions (from the Edit menu at the top of your computer screen).

    To apply formatting to specific existing text, select the text first.

  2. In the Substitutions window, select the Smart Dashes checkbox.

  3. Click a button to replace all occurrences of dashes in the document, or just in the selected text.

To turn off automatic formatting, deselect a checkbox. Then, to change formatting for existing text, select the text that contains the formatting you want to change and click one of the replacement buttons.
