Modify chart data references

You can modify a chart’s data references at any time in the Chart Data Editor. To edit a chart, make sure it’s unlocked.

Add, delete, and edit a data series

  1. Select the chart, click Edit Chart Data, then do any of the following:

    • Add a data series: Click a cell in a new row or column, then enter your data.

    • Delete a data series: Click the colored bar for the row or column you want to delete, click the arrow that appears, then click Delete Column or Delete Row (depending on whether you plotted rows or columns as data series).

    • Reorder data series: Drag the colored bar to reorder the chart data series.

  2. Close the Chart Data window to return to the chart.

  3. To add a currency symbol or other formatting, click Series in the Format inspector, then choose a number format from the Value Labels pop-up menu.

    Depending on the number format you choose, additional formatting options may appear.

Switch rows and columns as data series

You can change whether rows or columns are the data series.

  1. Select the chart, then click Edit Chart Data.

  2. Click the row or column button in the top-right corner of the Chart Data window.

  3. Close the Chart Data Editor when you’re done.

Share the x-axis for multiple values along the y-axis for scatter and bubble charts

Sharing the x-axis means plotting a single kind of value along the x-axis, while allowing for multiple kinds of values plotted along the y-axis.

  1. Select the chart, then click Edit Chart Data.

  2. Click Configure button, then select Share X Values.

  3. Close the Chart Data Editor when you’re done.
