Transfer files using iTunes

You can use iTunes on your computer to directly transfer documents between your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and your computer. This is useful if, for example, you don’t use iCloud.

Transfer a document from your computer

  1. Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes on your computer.

    After a moment, your iOS device appears on the right side of the iTunes toolbar.

  2. In iTunes, select your iOS device, then click Apps.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Apps window, then click Pages (in the Apps list under File Sharing).

  4. Click Add, select the file, then click Open.

  5. Open Pages on your iOS device.

  6. In the document manager, tap Add button, then tap Copy from iTunes.

  7. Tap the document.

    When the transfer is complete, the document appears in the document manager.

Pages can open documents that were saved using some types of file encryption available in Microsoft Office 97 or later. If you can’t open an encrypted Microsoft Word document, try opening the document in Word, changing the type of encryption or the encryption options used, and then saving it again before opening it in Pages.

Pages doesn’t import rich text format (.rtf) file types. Convert .rtf files to another supported file type before importing them into Pages.

Transfer a document to your computer

  1. Open Pages on your device, then do one of the following:

    • On iPad, if the document is open: Tap Share menu button (or tap Share menu button if the document is shared on iCloud), then tap Send a Copy.

    • On iPhone or iPod touch, if the document is open: Tap Tools button, tap Share and Print, then tap Send a Copy.

    • If the document is closed: Tap Share menu button in the document manager, tap Send a Copy, then tap the document you want to transfer.

  2. Tap iTunes, then choose a format.

  3. Connect your iOS device to your computer (or use iTunes Wi-Fi Sync) and open iTunes on your computer.

    After a moment, your iOS device appears on the right side of the iTunes toolbar.

  4. In iTunes, select your iOS device, then click Apps.

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the Apps window, then select Pages (in the Apps list under File Sharing).

  6. Select the document, click Save to, choose a location, then click Save to.

Imported tables of contents are displayed but can’t be updated on your iOS device. After you export your document back to your Mac, you can update the table of contents.
